Manowar is an American heavy metal band. The band is known for the warrior themes and aesthetics of its songs, its commitment to “true metal” and its frequent reference to Scandinavian mythology. It was formed by bassist Joey DeMaio and guitarist Ross Friedman in April 1980. The historic meeting of the two future members of the world's loudest band took place at a Black Sabbath concert in Newcastle, England. De Maio was the pyrotechnician for Black Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler, and Ross was a member of Shakin' Street, the warm-up band for Black Sabbath.
