American rock band formed in the East Bay area in 1987 by vocalist and guitarist Billy Joe Armstrong along with bassist and backing vocalist Mike Durnt. For most of their career, the band was featured as a power trio with drummer Tre Cool replacing John Kiffmeyer in 1990 before recording the band's second studio album Kerplunk. Session guitarist Jason White became a full member of the band in 2012, but returned to his role as a session member in 2016. Green Day performed under the name Sweet Children until 1989, and were part of the Bay Area punk scene of the late 1980s and early 1990s, originating at the 924 Gilman Street Club in Berkeley
