[00:08.26] Where do you write? [00:08.91] What are the circumstances? [00:10.28] Do you start with music? [00:11.27] Do you start with lyrics? [00:12.69] Um, and, you know my answer is always that it happens differently every time [00:17.21] And that's why I'm still so in love with songwriting [00:19.50] So what I've done here is shown you three different examples of, um [00:24.72] The beginning stages of these songs and how they each started, uh, different ways [00:29.79] So um, I'll explain them to you and maybe that will help you understand kind of [00:35.16] How I put songs together [00:37.22] I sent this voice memo to Ryan Tedder because I'd always wanted to work with him [00:41.03] And finally we, we scheduled some studio time [00:44.05] So I always wanna be prepared [00:47.50] I wanted to send him the idea that I was working on before we went into the studio [00:51.71] Just in case he wrote back and said [00:53.14] "I can't stand that, I wanna work on something else, think of something else" [00:56.20] So, um, I just sat down with the piano, put my phone on top of the piano [01:01.04] And just kind of explained to him where I wanted to go with the song [01:04.82] How I saw the melody sitting in [01:07.17] And, um, we ended up recording the song the next day [01:11.11] And it ended up being on the record called, uh, "I Know Places" [01:14.03] So this was the voice memo I sent to him [01:16.22] The night before we ended up finishing the song [01:20.13] Okay so this is kind of this rough idea thing [01:31.21] Uh-uh-uh-oh [01:32.84] Oh-oh-oh-I [01:34.28] Oh-oh-oh-oh [01:35.90] Oh-oh-oh-I [01:37.58] Oh-oh-oh-oh [01:39.08] Oh-oh-oh-I-I-I [01:43.35] Na na na na, waiting at the back door [01:46.54] They're around and the vultures come around [01:49.59] And you know that they, what they want us [01:52.64] Say what they want 'bout, say what they want 'bout us [01:55.81] And you come and sing [?] [01:58.89] I would not think about it, but I'm not done [02:01.75] Ever know that a thing or two about it, thing or two about it, I [02:07.32] 'Cause they got the cages, they got the boxes [02:12.52] And guns [02:13.94] They are the hunters, we are the foxes [02:18.28] And we run [02:19.74] Baby, I know some places we won't be found [02:25.68] And they'll be chasing their tails trying to track us down [02:31.45] Cause I, I know places we can hide [02:41.34] I know places, I know places [02:53.19] Uh-uh-uh-uh [02:54.59] Uh-uh-uh-I [02:56.25] Uh-uh-uh-I [02:57.84] Uh-uh-uh-I [02:59.21] Know places [03:00.53] Or whatever, I don't know, but that's basically [03:02.66] Just like a dark, really dark, like, um, lyric, like bridge thing and it's about like, uh [03:09.75] Everybody's like, trying to get into and like, ruin a love or whatever and it's like, you just [03:15.35] Whatever, you know [03:17.10] Um, and then the chorus would just go to that major and just like, be like ohh, chorus [03:21.56] Um, so I hope you like it [03:24.50] It wouldn't be a piano thing, it would be like [03:26.19] Nnn, ss, nn nnn, ss, nn [03:29.36] Like very, like, beat [03:30.88] Now I'm just making weird sounds [03:32.97] Hope you like it [03:34.22]
